Three towns, three characters

  • Greymouth (Māwhera) sits at the mouth of the Grey River and is the western end of the TranzAlpine train from Christchurch.
  • Westport (Kawatiri), founded in 1861, is the oldest European settlement on the West Coast, with Art Deco buildings built after the 1929 Murchison earthquake.
  • Hokitika is known for its 1902/03 Clock Tower and, on a clear day, views of Aoraki / Mount Cook from the main street.

Smaller places such as Runanga and Reefton are also served; use the full street address.

Rain, wind and keeping flowers fresh

Hokitika is one of the wettest places in New Zealand, with more than 2,800 mm of rain a year. Greymouth's rainfall is high by New Zealand standards, and a cold wind called "the Barber" comes down the Grey Valley. Westport gets heavy rain in every month, and has been hit by serious flooding, notably in 2021 and February 2022. In bad weather, it is sensible to give the recipient's phone number with the order and let the florist pick the best time to deliver.

Patients and hospitals on the Coast

The region's main public hospital is Te Nīkau Hospital and Health Centre at 71 Water Walk Road, Greymouth, with a 24-hour emergency department; general ward visiting hours are 10am to 2pm and 4pm to 8pm. Buller Health on Cobden Street serves Westport. We have not found a published flower rule for either, so check with the ward before sending flowers to a patient.

Sympathy and remembrance

Hokitika's Seaview Cemetery sits on Hospital Hill Road with views over the town and the Tasman Sea. In Westport, Orowaiti Cemetery on Utopia Road is the cemetery open for interments. For funeral flowers, send them to the funeral director or the family's home. Our sympathy flowers guide covers wording and timing.

Rural Coast addresses

Properties outside the towns may have RD addresses. NZ Post writes these as "RD" plus the number, with the mailtown and postcode after. If a house is more than half a kilometre from its roadside mailbox, NZ Post leaves parcels at the mailbox, so a phone number or a note for the florist helps. Rural addresses can take longer.

Florists also deliver to smaller places such as Runanga, Reefton.
