Flowers for Waikari Community Facility
Waikari Community Facility, at 16 Littles Drive in Waikari, North Canterbury, provides hospital-level aged care, respite care, end of life care and palliative care. Flowers from family and friends further away can brighten a resident's week. Here is what we know about sending them.
Order by 2 pm on weekdays (11 am Saturdays) for same-day delivery in many areas
- Ward rules quoted from the hospital
- Name and ward on the card
- Local florists deliver the flowers

No facility-specific rule. The former Canterbury DHB district-wide FAQ (archived, last updated 8 June 2022) says flowers are not possible in some hospital areas and asks people to check first; its ward ban list covers Christchurch, Christchurch Women's, Burwood and the community maternity units, not this facility. Check with the ward before sending.
“It is not possible to have flowers in some hospital areas. If you are thinking of purchasing flowers please ask the hospital volunteers in the gift shop first. Gift shops also sell flower vouchers, for flowers to be delivered when the patient goes home.”
No rule of its own
Health NZ's page for Waikari does not mention flowers. The only guidance is the former Canterbury DHB's district-wide FAQ, last updated in June 2022, which has advised: "It is not possible to have flowers in some hospital areas. If you are thinking of purchasing flowers please ask the hospital volunteers in the gift shop first. Gift shops also sell flower vouchers, for flowers to be delivered when the patient goes home."
Its list of banned wards did not include Waikari. Even so, check with the ward before sending, especially for someone receiving palliative care. Phone 03 314 4005.
Visiting Waikari
- Hours are 10am to 8pm every day.
- Ring the doorbell when you arrive.
Staff can tell you where flowers can go and whether a small arrangement suits the resident's room.
Getting flowers to Waikari Community Facility
For a small rural facility, plan a little ahead. Use the full facility address and the resident's name, order early in the day, and remember that weekend and public-holiday delivery is limited in many areas. If the flowers are going to a farm or lifestyle block instead, include the RD number; rural addresses can take longer.
Thank-you flowers for carers
The archived Canterbury page also said that flowers could not be delivered to staff during work, and that staff collected deliveries at the end of their shift. A card for the team, or a small treat to share, avoids that problem.

Who the facility is for
Health NZ describes Waikari as providing hospital-level aged care, respite care, end of life care and palliative care. It states that "You cannot self-refer to any services at this facility. Talk to your GP for referral information." There is no emergency department on site; for emergencies people are told to dial 111.
That is useful to know when you are choosing a gift. A person in respite or palliative care may be tired, and a small, simple gesture usually suits better than a large display.
Getting there and visiting well
- The facility is at 16 Littles Drive, Waikari, North Canterbury 7420.
