Flowers are welcome

Flowers can be sent directly to the wards throughout the day.

“Mail, flowers and newspapers: You can send mail and flowers directly to the wards throughout the day.”

Straight to the ward, any time of day

The hospital's page states: "Mail, flowers and newspapers: You can send mail and flowers directly to the wards throughout the day." There is no list of restricted wards on the page. A florist can therefore bring your order to the ward during the day; include the patient's full name and, if you know it, the ward name so it reaches the right bed quickly.

Patients in units such as intensive care are often treated differently at other hospitals, so if the person is very unwell a quick call to the ward is still sensible.

Visiting hours and visitor numbers

Tauranga Hospital visiting hours are 8am to 8pm every day, and most patients can have up to 2 visitors at a time. The main switchboard is 07 579 8000.

Because flowers go straight to the ward, the bouquet often arrives while the patient is resting or away for tests. Nurses will usually place it at the bedside, so a card with a clear name on the envelope helps everyone. If you are sending from overseas, order early so the florist has the whole day to plan the run to the ward.

Choosing flowers for a shared room

  • Pick a compact arrangement that stands on its own; vases are not always easy to find on a ward.
  • Lightly scented flowers are kinder to roommates than a heavily perfumed bouquet.
  • In summer, a cool ward is fine, but avoid leaving the bunch in a hot car before you visit.

Parking and the main entrance

Health NZ says Tauranga Hospital has more than 1,000 parking spaces. The main parking is the Clarke Street car park, with other areas near the cancer centre and the main Cameron Road entrance, and mobility spaces in both locations. The hospital buggy goes between the car park and the main entrance. Route 55 buses stop outside on Cameron Road.

Services and cafeterias

Health NZ describes a 24-hour emergency department, a secondary birthing unit and more than 20 specialised services, including cardiology, oncology and maternity care.

Two cafeterias operate daily, the ground floor one from 7:30am to 4pm and the first floor one from 7am to 7pm. There is an ATM on the ground floor and free Wi-Fi throughout.

If you cannot visit, Health NZ offers an online form on its hospital page for sending messages to admitted patients, and mail can be posted in the mailbox at the main entrance.
