Flowers for Bay of Islands Hospital in Kawakawa
Bay of Islands Hospital is on Hospital Road in Kawakawa and provides accident and emergency, maternity and other primary and secondary care for the area, including Kerikeri. If you want to send flowers to someone staying there, the guidance is friendly but old, so a quick check is worthwhile.
Order by 2 pm on weekdays (11 am Saturdays) for same-day delivery in many areas
- Ward rules quoted from the hospital
- Name and ward on the card
- Local florists deliver the flowers

Flowers are delivered to the patient as soon as they arrive. CAVEAT: the hospital-specific wording is only on the old Northland DHB page archived in 2010; the current Health NZ page for this hospital says nothing, but the identical sentence is still on the current Health NZ page for Whangārei Hospital (same district).
“Flowers Your flowers will be delivered to you as soon as they arrive.”
What Northland DHB has said
The former Northland DHB's patient page for this hospital, as archived in June 2010, has stated: "Flowers Your flowers will be delivered to you as soon as they arrive." Health NZ's current page for Bay of Islands Hospital says nothing about flowers either way.
The same sentence does still appear today on Health NZ's page for Whangārei Hospital, in the same district. That is a good sign, but because the Kawakawa wording is so old, check with the ward before sending. Phone the hospital on 09 404 0280.
Visiting Bay of Islands Hospital
- Visiting hours are 11am to 8pm every day.
- 2 people at a time may visit, and this includes children.
If you are visiting with flowers yourself, ask at the ward desk before taking them to the bed.
Delivery tips for the Bay of Islands
If you would rather send flowers to a home, use the full address, including the RD number for a rural property, and expect rural deliveries to take longer. Weekend and public-holiday delivery is limited in many areas, so order early in the day and early in the week if you can.
For towns close by, see our page for flower delivery in Kerikeri, or the Northland region overview, which also lists Kawakawa, Paihia, Russell and Moerewa.
Choosing what to send
A compact arrangement in a container is easiest for nurses to place. Lightly scented flowers suit shared rooms. If the patient is in maternity care, the new family may enjoy flowers more once they are home.
What the hospital provides
Health NZ lists a general ward, a primary birthing unit and 24/7 accident and medical services. Other services include outpatients, a diabetes service, home healthcare nursing, haemodialysis, physiotherapy, radiology and laboratory services.
With that mix, patients may be in for anything from a short stay to ongoing treatment, so it is worth asking at the desk which area the person is in before you order.
Facilities for visitors and families
- Free WiFi, called the Hospital Hotspot.
- A Quiet Room for patients and visitors.
- Whānau House accommodation in the hospital grounds.
- Smokefree and vapefree grounds.
- Interpreters, which staff can arrange if a patient is deaf or does not speak English as a first language.
Health NZ also describes a Kaitiaki programme that allows up to 2 supporters per patient. How that fits with the 2-visitor rule is best checked with the ward. The hospital's number is 09 404 0280. The page does not describe parking or the main entrance.
